Now keeping the Line variables of each parent in mind, we step into the canine version of fine
art. For those who seek THE BEST OF THE BEST, we offer three composites: the Companion
Protector Supreme,
the Choice and the most limited of the three, the Grand Victor
pup.
To understand just how we confer the title 'Choice' on a pup, the first step is to evaluate
the background Dobes of the litter and then we turn to the pups themselves. Before 21 days
of age we are studying comprehensiveness, personality and memory. We seek the youngsters
who, having only opened their eyes to life 7 to 10 days before, are fascinated with life
around the environment in which they were born; they are brave enough to explore and at this
time we make four primary judgments based on actual actions of the little ones.
- We seek pups who, when we enter their quarters (whelping room), stop whatever they
are doing, including nursing, and come to us for personal attention. This tells us we
have a pup who will make the ultimate companion as far as its personality, for it
has shown an early interest in being the best friend to man. It has chosen us over mom,
its nursing instinct and its peers.
- It has shown an exceptional level of confidence in itself because it was willing to
leave the safety of mom and litter mates.
- It has shown us an early example of its ability to reason. It reasoned that
its mother is always available to it, but we are not. Thus, here is a pup who has only
had its eyes open for seven to ten days and has, in its own way, solved an equation. We
already may be looking at a potential 'quick study': an extremely intelligent pup of a
breed already known for its human-like thought process. Rather than an "Alpha Dog"
we have found a young intellectual.
- Then last but not least we have the physical attributes. There are a few dozen finer
point of consideration with some not being able to be judged until the kid has more age
for this reason most Choice Selections are at least ten weeks before the final findings
are in. The end result: an exceptional Dobe with a great mind.
